Man Night

The first-ever Man Night festivities were held Chez Moi last night. Well, Chez Moi-et-Emylene, but it was MAN Night, so Em was deliberately absent.

I think it was a pretty resounding (if mellow) success. Those who came partook of MEAT, and POTATOES, and BEER, and PLAYSTATION 2 (I rented Wreckless – badly reviewed, but we had a lot of fun with it), and generally sat around enjoying “the company of men in the absence of women”, and the presence (and celebration) of gratuitously manly things. Well, more like GeekBoy things, but we’re not quibblers. Three Fine Fellows (plus Yours Truly) inaugurated the event, and we’ll probably grow it soon, although it’s good to keep these things small. The next Man Night will revolve around the upcoming (May 15th) release of The Matrix Reloaded. Oh, yes.

Note that there was no running with wolves, or beating of drums, or… none of that New Age crap, period. Don’t be startin’ no rumors. And please – don’t be hatin’.

There *may* be photos of the next Man Night, if I can get consent forms signed. And Arnon, you’re officially invited – we’ll toast you in absentia in the meantime, but try to get out here if you can. :)

Dang man, I’m a new aged, drum-banging vegemetarian pagan. Can I hit the tables a bit and focus on the potatoes and beer? :)

and..um..one thing I’m not clear on. How does one meet girls at a ‘Man Night’?

You aren’t quite New Age – more pagan, or “Old Age”. Which could be Manly…
The drum-banging is very Manly, but I was just saying that our Man Nights aren’t going for the drum-banging sort of Manliness – not that there’s anything wrong with that. Table-striking is always encouraged. :)
The vegetarianism is a definite UnManly Thing, but you make up for it with (a) more love of beer, and (b) more hair. Being hairy is definitely Manly, so you can coast by on that.
As for meeting girls, I haven’t ruled out taking Man Night Field Trips (I’d say “pub crawls” but crawling isn’t Manly), and women might well be encountered on such excursions. They can’t be INVITED to Man Night, but we can bring Man Night to them. It’s in The Rules somewhere.

Well, there aren’t any women around but it still doesn’t sound very manly. You dono’t have to go all out and rent poker chips and cigars (you brought ‘er, you poker chips :-p) but some form of cards on side of ps2ing is recommended. As for movies, I suppose any action flick will do but if you want to learn to be better at being manly whilst outside the confines of the group I suggest you look at two prototypes. Rent either ‘The Quiet Man’ or ‘The Thin Man’ and learn how to be one. ‘To kill a Mocking Bird’ will also do – they call chests ‘pecks’ for a reason.
