Em’s a whirlwind – she’s prepping for the 2nd Annual Dessert Party we’re hosting tomorrow night. There ought to be around 15 people coming over, which is roughly the number of desserts on the menu. At last count, there’s a cardamom cake, a carrot cake, a chocolate cake, a cheesecake, a pecan pie, a lemon meringue pie, a banana-creamcheese pie (whatever that is), an apple pie, oatmeal-chocolate-chip cookies, “thumbprint” cookies (Yay! Biometric dessert!) with strawberry or apricot preserves, rollie-pollies (four different fillings), madeleines, and tiramisu. All made from scratch by Em. Wowza. Oh, and for good measure there’ll also be chocolate-covered strawberries, assorted fruit, dessert wines, coffee, etc.
I even helped out a little – I did some chopping and peeling and such, a LOT of dish-washing, and more than a few grocery runs. Oh, and I set up myHTPC on the WiFi-networked media PC in the library, so we can now stream our MP3s (or internet radio stations, or whatever) over the stereo there, using only my Keyspan Digital Media Remote to control the playback via a fairly slick interface (playlist and visuals) displayed on the TV. Okay, that has almost nothing to do with the dessert party, but whatever. Em likes to make millions of cakes, and I like to load up cool hardware with the coolest freeware apps I can find, and immerse myself in the ensuing digital media info-glut. To each their own. And at least the two aren’t mutually exclusive – I’m perfectly happy to eat dessert while I tinker.
Speaking of cool free software (and/or services), Furl looks interesting – I’m always looking out for newer and better ways to record/manage/access the countless bookmarks I accumulate. I found the link to Furl on John Battelle’s Searchblog, which itself is interesting.
Oh, and one more thing before I go do chores (clean, do more dishes, etc.) and hit the sack. THIS is teh rock. Go check it out RIGHT NOW. You WILL thank me.
