PRIDE!!!

Sunday, June 29th, 2003

Pride Flag over the CastroWhoo Hoo! It’s Pride Weekend here in San Francisco, as in MANY other cities worldwide. Speaking of which, this time of year makes me wish I were back in Toronto - aside from having the BEST Pride I’ve ever participated in (yes, including San Francisco’s!), recent events make me feel as PROUD as I’ve ever felt to be Canadian. Between this and the decriminalization of the posession of small amounts of marijuana (another source of pride), you have to figure that Toronto is the place to be this weekend. On the other hand, San Francisco’s status as the unofficial center of the LGBT universe might just make it a close second. :)
Speaking of Pride…

BusyBusyBusy

I think I’ve been working too much. I’ve been trying to come up with better strategies to manage the workload, but of course - that’s more work. Sigh.
On the plus side, I saw my first Segway HT outside a post office here in San Francisco. It was chained to a post, so I didn’t get to see it in motion, but it was still a kick. I’ve seen movies of it tooling around, but it’s different in person. You also get a better sense of the scale of the thing. It still blows my mind how much amazing engineering they crammed into such a tiny package. If anyone wants to send me one, I’ll be happy to review it…

New Word of the Day

Thursday, June 12th, 2003

I learned a new word from Arnon today: secondment

Speaking of learning new words, go see Spellbound, it’s a really wonderful film.

Hey, Arnon - are you still out there? I’m glad you (apparently) don’t have SARS, and I hope your nasal apparatus is healing up nicely, and I’m loving your LJ, please keep posting. It inspires to get on here myself every once in a while… :)
Been working from home since the end of last week, so I hadn’t shaved in about that long. I had a staff meeting today at our San Mateo office, so I shaved before heading down there, and botched it pretty badly. Moral: If you don’t shave for a few days, you lose that edge… (sorry)

This weekend, Em and I are going to the amazing Monterey Bay Aquarium (we’re members, just because it’s that cool a place) with JebAvaRe, which is just something nice to look forward to…

mod_proxy

Wednesday, June 11th, 2003

Hooray! I figured out (well, partly) mod_proxy on Apache. Who cares? No one but me…
What this means is that I should now be able to move this site (mostly) to Apache on OpenBSD, which will simplify some things (like the Gallery), while still allowing me to host portions of the site (transparently, thanks to mod_proxy) on Windows and IIS, so that I can keep playing with ASP.NET. In other words, I get the best of both worlds, all with a single (Dynamic!) IP.
What this means for people looking at the site is that they *shouldn’t* notice any changes - at least no changes resulting strictly from adding Apache to the mix - since key apps like Movable Type and Gallery will run on either platform. But it’s *easier* to run them on *nix/Apache than on Windows/IIS, so I should spend less time tweaking scripts and settings to get things to work.

Carolyn and Jason are Coming!

Thursday, June 5th, 2003

Yay! It’s official - I got the play-by-play from Carolyn while Jason clicked on the BUY button, and these fine friends are now set to visit us. They get here July 3rd, so we get to hang out with them full-time for the whole long weekend, and part-time thereafter. Whee! I’ve already booked Chez Panisse for dinner on the Saturday (didn’t have enough notice for the French Laundry - they book TWO months in advance, and Chez P only books one month out, la dee da).
